The 9 Dangerous Goods Classes

Every dangerous good shipped by air is classified into one of nine hazard classes under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), built on ICAO’s international technical instructions. The class assigned determines exactly how the item must be packed, labelled, and documented.

Many products carry more than one hazard — for example, a battery-powered device may be both a Class 9 (lithium battery) and a Class 3 (flammable liquid electrolyte) risk. We identify every applicable class before your shipment is packed.

For both export and import, dangerous goods rules are enforced by the IATA DGR at the international level, and by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) within India. Certain categories — such as explosives or specific chemicals — may also involve other regulators, including PESO (Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organisation). We check which of these apply to your shipment before it’s booked.
